How do Myopia Management soft contact lenses work?

Picture
Key points
  • Myopia management soft contact lenses are designed to slow this accelerated eye growth based on how images are focused in the different parts of the retina, at the back of the eye.
  • They work by directing a portion of incoming light rays to focus in front of the retina and act as a stop signal for eye growth.
  • Center distance multifocal soft lenses weren't originally designed for myopia management, but were the first type of soft contact lenses shown to slow progression of myopia in children.
Specific myopia management soft contact lens designs have been shown to provide effective myopia management in children and teenagers.

Ortho-k for Myopia Management

Picture
Key points
  • Ortho-k provides two benefits: correcting blurred vision from myopia and slowing down myopia progression.
  • Ortho-k has the largest volume of evidence for myopia management in children and teenagers, compared to other treatments.
  • How ortho-k provides a myopia management effect is believed to be due to the way it alters how peripheral light rays are brought to focus in front of the retina.
  • If ortho-k is being used for myopia management and lens wear is stopped, it is important that eyes are carefully tracked to ensure that myopia remains stable, with ortho-k wear resumed if myopia is found to progress faster than expected.

What is Artopine?

Picture
Key points
  • Atropine eye drops in 1% concentration can be used in eye exams to dilate the pupil of the eye and pause its focus, to help with measuring the eye's prescription in some children. This temporary effect causes sensitivity to light and difficulty focusing up close for reading.
  • Concentrations of 0.01% to 0.05% are more commonly used for long-term myopia management and typically have only small effects on light sensitivity and close-up vision.
  • Atropine eye drops can slow myopia progression in children, called myopia management. There is a ‘dose-dependent’ effect, which means that higher concentrations have stronger effects on slowing eye growth but also have more side effects.
  • Atropine eye drops have a high safety profile when used normally.
